PPC companies such as Overture or Espotting allow you to submit your site title and description, your site URL and a list of keywords (or bid terms) which you wish your site to be linked with.

If a visitor to the PPC site searches under your bid term and clicks through to your site you are charged a bid amount (for example 5 cents),. The bit amount that you pay is determined by how high you rank up the listings. The higher your bid amount the higher you will appear in the listing.

Title: Cheap Cameras

Description: All cameras less than £200 with...

No guarantee.
URL: www.yoursite.com

Keywords with bid amounts:
- Camera (10 pence)
- Video camera (12 pence)

1) Your site will be listed within a day or two of submission (much more quickly than free search engines)

2) It will alter your site's ranking straight away.

3) The PPC company will provide you with reports showing click activity for each keyword.

4) Their engines differ in the regularity and format of the reporting so you can use your tracking reports to obtain better and immediate information.

5) Furthermore, you can compare your figures with the engine's and query any significant discrepancy.

6) If click activity is unusually high it may be that a competitor has been clicking on just to incur costs against you. You should be able to detect this by comparing the figures for unique hits and actual hits (several hits per visitor).
